Exploring The Unique Species Of The Ryukyu Archipelago
The Ryukyu Archipelago is divided into North, Central, and South Ryukyu by the Kerama Gap and the Tokara Gap. Throughout multiple connections and separations from the continent during the ice age, it has fostered a distinctive biodiversity. The “Yanbaru” in the northern mountainous region of Okinawa Island, Iriomote Island in the southern part of Okinawa Prefecture, and the islands of Tokunoshima, Amami Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture, together have been designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
