Halcyon coromanda bangsi

Japanese Name: リュウキュウアカショウビン
Chinese Name: 琉球赤翡翠
English Name: Ruddy Kigfisher
Origin: Breeds in the Okinawa Islands and is a summer visitor

The Ruddy Kingfisher in the Ryukyu Islands is a subspecies, characterized by a more intense purple color on its back feathers compared to the nominate subspecies (Halcyon coromanda coromanda) found in China and India. The silver-blue portion on the back is also larger. Ruddy Kingfishers migrate from Southeast Asia to various parts of Japan in the summer, with sightings in mainland Japan typically occurring after May. In Okinawa, their calls can be heard as early as April, but they are challenging to spot due to their forest habitat.

Breeding of the Ruddy Kingfisher is occasionally observed on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island.

2020/5/26, this Ruddy Kingfisher attempted to fly through the windows of our office in the settlement. Unfortunately, it collided with the glass but safely flew away after resting for 30 minutes.
2022/5/21, on Tokunoshima Island, the Ruddy Kingfisher appeared exceptionally vibrant in purple hues during the night.
